Day 1 : 29.6 miles - Black Mountain

#30daysofbiking is what you make it. I mention it to people and they say that they couldn't commit to riding every day. But for me, that's the exact point. Sign up and it gives you the incentive to make time and get out there and do what we all love doing. To ride a bike. To work. To the shops. To nowhere in particular. Just to ride.

The big pull for me is knowing thousands of others are doing exactly the same thing. And then sharing their stories online. So, back to me.

And it starts again.

The first morning in Wales with the family and I'd already planned an early solo ride up to the summit of my favourite climb, the Black Mountain.

The house was still asleep as I set off at 8:00am and I wasn't sure what temperature to expect. I'd checked various i-apps and they were saying 2C. Back home we have a wall mounted thermometer so I tend to make a pretty good call on what to wear. Here though, 10 minutes into the ride I was already feeling overdressed in winter gear.

After Llangadog, the route takes you up the lower slopes. On the climb you really get a sense of the variety of the environment. Enclosed wooded sections as the road zig-zags over the River Sawdde, then more open hedge-lined rural areas and then you reach the cattle grid.

Once over this landmark the tarmac is smooth, the scenery becomes rugged and exposed and the road has a number of switch-backs. This is the best part of the climb. The only new addition to the route this year was the humorous lettering painted onto one of the steeper sections; "I MUST BREAK YOU".

Below are a couple of screen-grabs from the video I took on today's descent of the mountain. As soon as I'm back in England, I'll upload some videos.

Great to be back in Wales. Couldn't think of a better place to start the #30daysofbiking :)
