Day 14 : 41.1 miles

Just the working commutes again today but I knew I'd go for an extended route home to make the 500 mile mark. Another dry day and it's becoming milder again. And man, I'm hungry all the time now. For most of the ride in, I was thinking about of the food I could buy at the station as I rode through.

The ride home from the station had a canal theme crossing the Kennet and Avon a number of times. The route was mainly flat so I first added the loop up to Boot Farm to add a bit of climbing, then the extended loop out past Greenham Common.

Tonight's ride home was very quiet again hardly seeing another soul, other than a solitary old fella in a straw boater doing a good deed by clearing the verges of litter. It's normally a thankless job, so I thanked him. Actually thinking about it, he could have been an offender doing his community service. He still deserved a thanks all the same. So today, I reached the 500 mile mark. Time for a beer.

  1. Well done on the 500 Miles.
Just curious, what do you use to plan your routes?

Do you know most routes anyway and just choose as your going, or plan before leaving?

  2. Thanks for the comment. Many moons ago I bought Memory Map (around £50) which is the equivalent of all the OS maps for the entire South of England, with height data (you don't tend to get height data with online maps etc). For weekend rides with other friends, I'll tend to pre-plan the routes using the software. That way I can choose to make it extra hilly or extra long or whatever.

For my commutes, I know the area so well, I tend to head out and see how the mood takes me, or if I'm tired etc. I rarely extend the commute in, as I need to catch a particular train. However for the ride home from the station, I'm free to take as long as I like (within reason!).
